Demand Studios Review Recommends: Ebyline

As I've mentioned on Twitter, I'm working on compiling a list of alternatives to Demand Studios. It's taking a bit longer than I thought, for two reasons: There are more Demand Studios alternatives than I realized and I have to keep working away at Demand and for my other writing clients if I am to pay my bills.

I wanted to give you guys a heads up on at least one company I discovered which is just starting out, called Ebyline. They are in the beta phase and are looking for freelance writers to apply for consideration.

Ebyline logoFrom the sounds of it, they will be running things in a similar manner as Demand Studios, except for more high end clientele. Stories will pay between $25-$300.

Variety, MinnPost.com, ProPublica and The Texas Observer have signed on as publishers.

Ebyline's advisory board includes some pretty impressive names: Daily Variety editor Leo Wolinsky; Jeff Johnson, former CEO and publisher of the Los Angeles Times; former executive editor of Rolling Stone and ESPN vice president of original entertainment Robert Wallace; former president of Los Angeles Times Digital Bob Bellack and Former NASA engineer Lance Saunder.

They are only accepting applicants with substantial journalism experience. They don't specify any exact qualifications, but if you meet the standards set out for the Demand Studios feature articles you might want to consider applying for Ebyline.

You'll need to add your relevant work history, as well as provide online clips. I don't recommend including Demand Studios clips and it might be a good idea to leave that off your work history as well unless you have little else to list.

We all know how much of the media world looks down their noses at Demand Media and it's possible that they wouldn't look kindly on an association with them on your application, though that's just speculation.

Keep checking back as I plan on posting the full list of Demand Studios alternatives soon, as well as individual reviews of companies listed.
