Applying for eHow Money and eHow Home

By Demand Studios Review Editorial

Posted On 9/24/10:

Once upon a time there was but one true eHow.

All Demand Studios writers were allowed to claim and write any title slated to appear on the site. What a glorious time it was.

There has now been a change to that setup with Demand Media creating eHow categories, and only allowing certain writers to write on certain topics.

eHow LogoWhile this is probably a positive for eHow as a whole, ensuring that more qualified writers are creating topic specified content, and it's good for writers who are approved (less competition when it comes to claiming articles), it's not so good for the average Demand Studios writer. Suddenly you're not allowed to claim and write as many titles and that sucks.

There are still plenty of articles to write, with literally hundreds of thousands of titles available on average at any given time but when it comes to available titles, more is always better.

So far it looks like eHow has rolled out two of their new sections: eHow Money and eHow Home & Garden.

Some writers were approved to write on these topics automatically based on the work they've done in the past.

eHow Home I was approved to write for eHow Home & Garden, receiving an email informing me of such before I even knew it existed.

Sure enough, next time I logged in there was "eHow Home & Garden" listed under publishers.

I was not, however, extended an automatic invitation to write for eHow Money.

I've written a number of articles on this topic for eHow in the past, but not anywhere near as many as I've written on the home and garden front.

Basically, I find it easier to write about how to care for azaleas than how to build a respectable stock portfolio.

Still, I wanted to see if I could get approved for eHow Money on the strength of what I have written in that area.

So I went to the contact us page (which you can find at the bottom of your work desk) and prepared to write a letter asking to be considered.

(By the way, don't be a pest, but occasionally asking for things from Demand Media is well within bounds. It's how I got my claim limit raised from 10 to 15 articles.)

I was going to just send the message in under one of the catch all questions sections, but discovered that they actually have a tab for applying for both eHow Money and eHow Home & Garden.

For some reason, maybe to avoid an onslaught of applications, Demand never sent out an email, or gave any other indication that it was possible to apply for these channels.

Apparently it is, and I encourage everyone to apply. After all, the worst thing that can happen is they turn you down and you're back where you started.

So, go to the contact us page and look for the "eHow Money Permissions Request" and "eHow Home Permissions Request" tabs. Click that and then on the "How do I gain permission..." tab.

You will then be asked to submit an article or clip relating to that topic, as well as a description of your experience in that area.

Then, for some unnecessarily complicated reason, you need to click on the "Need Additional Help?" button to be taken to an on-page form where you can actually submit these items.

After that it's the waiting game. But since the waiting game sucks, play Hungry Hungry Hippos instead.

Yes, that is a Simpsons reference. Unfortunately, I couldn't find that clip online.

So here's a different clip, way back from when The Simpsons only existed as short clips on The Tracey Ullman Show. It's money themed, so it kind of works. Maybe it will help you pass the time while you wait on eHow Home and Garden or eHow Money approval.

(Warning: It took a while for The Simpsons to hit its stride and get really funny.)
